THE LIST : boycott or buy?

We're often asked how to tell if a product is cruelty free, especially now that so many companies make claims on their products that simply aren't true! There's a handful of lists out there you can trust, including the PETA list of who does & doesn't test on animals, but we've found most of those companies don't deliver to Australia - or charge a fortune because we're so far away! Our list covers as many global products as we could find that deliver to Australia, along with a selection of local Australian companies for Imogen's home country.

OUR LIST: the companies we loath & love

The companies on the left simply refuse to stop testing their products on animals, despite the fact that we have 100's of ways to make our eyelashes plumper, longer, fatter and sexier ... at the expense of the eyes of bunny rabbits and other innocent animals. If you'd like to read more about the barbaric practices like Draizing and skin tests still used by the companies on the left side of the list, take a look at this article.

Company: Iams/Eukanuba
Testing Activity: A list too long to mention, view this video for more details of the tests where they cut out pieces of dogs muscles to test the nutrition of their dog food.
Products: Pet Food
What they say: "Posing as an animal lover, an activist "undercover investigator" was hired for an Iams-funded role in the contract facility. She had responsibility for the socialization and enrichment of the dogs participating in Iams' feeding studies, and was paid to develop and implement a program to ensure that these dogs were well cared for. Rather than focusing on her assignment she captured video not of the scenes of the socialization and enrichment activities she was being paid to develop and deliver, but of dogs and cats that were housed in the same facility but not a part of Iams studies. What we can do is thank Colgate for their efforts so far and encourage them to work quickly towards the permanent ban of animal testing in all of its products.

  • 5 Top tips

1) Simply don't buy from the companies on the red side of the list - they'll get the message eventually!

2) Always read labels & where possible look up the company website to see their position on Animal Testing. Some companies put lies on their labels - shock!

3) Know the brands that don't test like Revlon, Mac & Lush so that you can shop guilt free & with confidence.

4) Shop online - Its much easier to do your research with Google at hand. You can always select your product and then find it in a store if you need your shopping fix or find it wholesale on eBay!

5) If you can't find a product you like at a cruelty free shop, such as a particular shade of eye-shadow, why not request it? Many cruelty free companies are just starting out and welcome feedback
